Based on the life of the legendary and extraordinary story of Edith Piaf, this truly is a beautiful story of rags to riches, the struggle and enormous success but self destruction somewhere seeps in and a beautiful life is cut short and leaves behind loads of memories which is depicted beautifully and in the most realistic manner.
One has to be of a different caliber altogether to be growing up in filthy whorehouse and then live in the streets and grow up to become a legend of a singer.
When Martion Cotillard had got Oscar in 2008 for this performance of hers I used to wonder but at the same time was sure she must have done a great job and boy was I right, she deserved every bit of the Oscar she had got for this one.
The story keeps shuttling between her youth, her adulthood and her last days and each stage is equally painful but yet beautiful.
Really nothing can be more painful than success with self destruction.
Watch it if you appreciate good cinema apart from the run of the mill stuff as well
