Kashmakash (Naukadubi in Bengali)- Lyrical..Like a poetry flowing in its own pace with no hurry :)

This is one among the several movies I was waiting to watch for the following reasons:

1)Based on Rabindranath Tagore's short story'Naukadubi'

2) Rituparno Ghosh's direction

3)Both the sisters Riya and Raima in the same movie of course the latter being one of my favorite actress

Having mentioned the above reasons it was not easy to watch this movie as the shows were too late but thanks to a friend who wanted to watch this movie and my desire to watch this movie in the theater was fulfilled :)

The fact that the story belonged to Rabindranath Tagore had created enough interest for me for quite sometime to watch this movie directed by a director that of a caliber of Rituparno Ghosh took the interest to another higher level altogether and yes I was not disappointed a bit and having seen Rituparno's earlier movie I kind of knew the movie would be anything but far away from fast paced and flow like a beautiful lyrical poetry instead.

The story is set in year 1921 where the romantic realtionship between Kolkata-based law student Ramesh(Jishu Sengupta) and his friend's sister Hemnalini(Raima Sen) gets into troubled waters when Ramesh is ordered to visit his village by his father and thereafter to find out that his father has arranged his marriage to Susheela, the daughter of a poor and helpless widow. Ramesh becomes outrageous and refuses to accept the proposal outright and tells his father clearly that his heart already belongs to someone else and is on the verge of storming out… when the widow, stops him and pleads him,her pleas soften his heart and Ramesh agrees to wed Susheela, but of course with a heavy heart. The wedding ceremony takes place and Ramesh leaves his village in a boat alongside with his newly wed wife Susheela for Kolkata…

And then their ill fated boat gets capsized in the rough waters during a fierce storm....

Ramesh finds himself washed ashore with Susheela passed out by his side, when he wakes up. Ramesh gets her home and the duo attempt to set house with Ramesh's inhibitions becoming quite visible. But soon Ramesh realizes that the nubile nymphet he has brought home isn't Susheela… but Kamla(Riya Sen) who was supposed to be getting married to a Doctor from Varanasi (Kashi then) and Ramesh of course gets set to unite Kamla with her real husband and at the same time commits to marry the love of his life Hemnalini but truth does not remain hidden for a long time and the marital development of Ramesh comes out in the open much to everyone's dismal and Hemnalini becomes heartbroken completely and Ramesh to avoid any sort of scandal gets away to Gorakhpur with Kamla..

While they were settling in Gorakhpur and Hemnalini was coming in terms with her grief in Varanasi as everyone thinks and believes change of scenery might mend the heart but that is never the solution really ..

And then accidentally Kamla discovers the truth as she stumbles upon the newspaper advertisement which Ramesh has advertised. Unable to handle the fact that she's been living a marital lie, Kamla walks out of the house determined to drown herself in the river.

But all is well that end wells and I am not letting rest of the story out it would be unfair to this piece of art...

Performance wise I was very sure about good performances from rest of the cast except for Riya Sen but she really turned out to be the surprise package giving an equally great performance such as her talented sister.

If you are a cinema love I would go indulge yourself leisurely in this one of a kind cinema...
